Calculating the Percentage of Your Boer Goats

All Boer goats originated from South Africa and came to US via different routes. Many Boer goats came via New Zealand and Australia while others came as embryos by Canada. Few goats came directly via imports to US. Many feel that some were bred with feral animals of Australia with all white-bodied and red head passed off to unwary Americans as “Fullbloods” were back in the days when it was hard to get fullbloods.

Some further feels that the genetic material pool was somewhat restricted in 5 years the animals were quarantined in New Zealand, as some of the in breeding might or might not have been the best. Still others believe that South Africans didn’t sell their best to Australians or people in New Zealand. Thus the animals, which moved through there were somehow inferior; these folks feel confident those arrived here are directly either from Canada were superior.

· Fullblood is 100% Boer and no other breed has in it.
· A fullblood buck bred to a brush goat or may be Spanish goat or any other breed actually produces a 1/2 blood or 50% kid.
· If that 50% (1/2) doe is breeds to a fullblood buck, the young is 75% (3/4). (You could do this calculation by adding 100% plus 50% then dividing the 150 by 2.)
· If you breed the 75% doe to a fullblood buck, the young is 7/8 Boer or 87.5%.
· 15/16 or 93.75% is produced by 87.5% doe bred to a fullblood buck.
· 31/32 or 96.875% is produced by 93.75% doe bred to a fullblood buck.
· 63/64 or 98.4375% is produced by 96.875% doe bred to a fullblood buck.
· 127/128 or 99.2% is produced by 98.4% doe bred to a fullblood buck.
· 255/256 or 99.6% is produced by 99.2% doe bred to a fullblood buck.
· A doe is known as pureblooded if she is 15/16 (93.75%) or better.
· A buck is known as pureblooded if he is 31/32 (96.875%).

When showing in authorized proof (i.e., ABGA, USBGA, or IBGA), there is no difference between purebloods and fullbloods as far as classes go. Percentage does/doelings (anything less than 15/16 or 94%) are proved in their own classes apart from fullblood and purebloods. Only fullblood or pureblood bucks/buckling were permitted to be displayed in the authorized proof. Most 4-H shows don’t permit bucks at all and only show wethers and doelings.
